Week of January 26, 2009:
Math 9:
We are just finishing up our unit on Mensuration. We have our individual test on Tuesday on this week. The highlight of this unit was our activity where we found the surface area of a shere. The students cut an orange in half and then drew circles on their papers using their orange half. Next they peeled the oranges and placed the peels inside oranges trying to see how many circles they could fill up. The groups figured out that the peel fills up four circles so the surface area of a sphere is 4 areas of the circle or 4 * pi * radius squared.
Also the students will be finishing up their big summative patterning task: measuring the first floor of the senior school. Many students have come up with creative ways to complete this big task. The reports are due on Friday but if they turn them in on Thursday, they get a free homework pass!
Math Studies 12:
The students are finishing up their month of presentations on problems from topics of Grade 11 Math Studies as preparation for their mock IB exams which begin on February 4. Most of the students have begun to review all the IB topics on their own to get ready for this big exam. Remember, the best way to take an exam is to be well prepared, well slept and well fed.
Grade 8 Design Technology:
The students are finishing up with their Alice story where they told what happen to our fair maiden who is lost at sea. How will the story end? Will she be saved? Or will she come to a horrible death?
7BC Math Enhancement:
This week I will be working with all the students of 7B and 7C. We'll be learning about tessellations and then creating a work of art based on this concept.
